The 1996 Clos Vougeot from the Mugneret sisters is beginning to develop lovely secondary aromatics, but is still several years away from primetime drinking. The nose is a classy and quite classic mélange of dark berries, black cherries, sous bois, espresso, complex soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and beautifully complex, with a fine core of sweet fruit, tangy, well-integrated acids, excellent focus and balance and impressive length and grip on the poised and zesty finish. This is a beautiful young bottle of Clos Vougeot that should really start to turn heads around its twentieth birthday and prove to be extremely long-lived. 93+ - JG
